Duke Energy to Test Nuclear Emergency Sirens on January 7, 2026

Duke Energy will test its Nuclear Emergency Sirens beginning at 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. 156 outdoor sirens will be activated for 5 to 30 seconds. Officials stress that no action is required by the public.
The following is from the Duke Energy website:
Nuclear Sirens: Your Signal to Stay Informed
Nuclear sirens are a vital part of public safety near our nuclear facilities. While their sound may be startling, it’s important to know that sirens are tested regularly and do not automatically signal an evacuation.
Their primary purpose is to alert people outdoors to go inside and tune in to local radio or television stations for official updates. In the event of an actual emergency, emergency management officials will provide clear instructions through multiple channels.
Staying calm and informed is key – your safety starts with knowing what the sirens mean and how to respond.
Duke Energy will test the sirens again on April 1, July 1, and October 7.
