Volunteers Needed, Families Welcome

by Editorial Board | Jan 7, 2026

These signs are placed on the storm drains to remind people not to dump anything down the drain.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services Department has a robust volunteer program with lots of activities scheduled throughout the year. This Saturday, January 10, one of their programs is in Davidson, and they are still looking for volunteers.

Volunteers will be marking storm drains with small educational placards to let people passing by know that Only Rain Goes Down the Drain. These Storm drain markers help prevent pollution in our streams through education.

During this event, volunteers will be given a map of an area to mark drains. They will use the new Storm Drain Marking Application through Quick Capture to document drains that are marked and drains that may need repairs. Volunteers should expect to walk or drive 1-3 miles during this event.

Volunteers are asked to register for the event by Friday, January 9. They will meet at the Davidson Branch Library (119 S. Main Street) at 10:00 a.m. The program is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This is one of the first projects for 2026 and hopefully the start of another great volunteer year. Last year 5,200 volunteers collected 69,000 pounds of trash, marked 2,298 Storm Drains, collected 180 volunteer monitoring reports, and cared for 8,527 trees.
