Lawing-Lesher-Lesher Piano and Voice Recital - POSTPONED

Jan. 31 @ 7:30 p.m.

Sloan Music Center: Tyler-Tallman Hall

Due to the likely chance of snow this Saturday (especially impacting our guests' travels), we have made the decision to postpone the Lawing-Lesher-Lesher recital to Sunday, March 1 at 3 p.m. in Tyler-Tallman Hall. We apologize for any inconvenience! Dr. Aaron Lesher, a Davidson College alumnus, was a student of Cynthia Lawing during his undergraduate years. While he maintains a busy schedule with his medical practice, he continues to find joy playing the piano. His son Campbell is now a second-year student at Davidson, enrolled in voice lessons and the Davidson College Chorale.  Join us for this unique teacher-student and father-son recital! Free and open to the public.

Children in K-5th grade are invited to drop in to the library on Mondays from 4pm-6pm for Homework Help! Trained Homework Help volunteers provide a welcoming and supportive environment where young learners can:

  • Get help completing assignments
  • Practice important foundational math and reading skills (such as math facts or reading)
  • Explore and get connected to important Library resources, including Tutor.com, a free professional tutoring service that provides 15 free tutoring sessions in any subject each week with a Library card or ONE Access account

Whether your child needs a little extra support, or a focused one-on-one support session, Homework Help is a great way to build confidence and stay on track. Let us partner with you in your child’s learning journey! Note: While our homework help program is intended for student support, it is not a tutoring service. Volunteers provide help and guidance to the best of their ability, but are not certified teachers. Volunteers do not complete assignments for students. Students are called to work 1 on 1 with a trained volunteer for a 20-minute block after completing a short intake form to share your learning support needs. Davidson provides this program on Mondays from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m., however all Library branches offer Homework Help too! Join us on the first Tuesday of each month at 2:00 pm for The In-Person Davidson Branch Book Club! This month we will be discussing How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley. "When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens' Social Club three afternoons a week, she assumes she'll be spending her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards. The members of the Social Club, however, are not at all what Lydia was expecting. From Art, a failed actor turned kleptomaniac to Daphne, who has been hiding from her dark past for decades to Ruby, a Banksy-style knitter who gets revenge in yarn, these seniors look deceptively benign--but when age makes you invisible, secrets are so much easier to hide. When the city council threatens to sell the doomed community center building, the members of the Social Club join forces with their tiny friends in the daycare next door--as well as the teenaged father of one of the toddlers and a geriatric dog--to save the building. Together, this group's unorthodox methods may actually work, as long as the police don't catch up with them first." This program will be provided by Davidson library staff.

Public Lecture with Yanni Kotsonis on the Greek Revolution and the Violent Birth of Nationalism

Feb. 4 @ 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Davidson College Visual Arts Center – Semans Lecture Hall

In 1821, a diverse territory in the southern Balkans on the fringe of the Ottoman Empire was thrust into a decade of astounding mass violence. In this talk on his new book, The Greek Revolution and the Violent Birth of Nationalism, Professor Yanni Kotsonis traces how something new emerged from an imperial mosaic of myriad languages, religions, cultures, and localisms—the world’s first ethnic nation-state, one that was born from the destruction and the creation of whole peoples, and which set the stage for the modern age of nationalism that was to come. Yanni Kotsonis exposes the everyday chaos and brutality in the Balkan peninsula as the Ottoman regime unraveled. He follows the future Greeks on the seaways to Odesa, Alexandria, Livorno, and the Caribbean, and recovers the stories of peasants, merchants, warriors, aristocrats, and intellectuals who navigated the great empires that crisscrossed the region. Kotsonis recounts the experiences of the villagers and sailors who joined the armed battalions of the Napoleonic Wars and learned a new kind of warfare and a new practice of mass mobilization, lessons that served them well during the revolutionary decade. He describes how, as the bloody 1820s came to a close, the region’s Muslims were no more and Greece was an Orthodox Christian nation united by a shared language and a claim to an ancient past.
