Celebrating Black History Month

Dear Reader,
This year marks the 100th year of Black History Month.
It has been a century since author and historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week, which eventually became Black History Month in 1976.
As readers and booksellers, Black History Month offers us a chance to lift up some of the most preeminent Black voices that shaped America. It also lends us space and time to reflect upon lessons of community and equity, and to celebrate the legacies of Black artists, writers, and organizers.
We learn so much when we take time to read together. Perhaps there’s no better reminder of this than when reading picture books. The stories that were written for the littlest of readers often have some of the greatest resonance among adults when read aloud.
Main Street Books has a number of picture books and middle-grade reads celebrating the many contributions of Black artists and writers. I encourage you to peruse the beautifully illustrated selections we have in store.
Want a recommendation? Explore a list of our booksellers’ favorites below, or check out friend of the store Patrice Gopo’s podcast, Picture Books are for Grown-Ups, Too! where she speaks with picture book authors, illustrators, and enthusiasts alike.

With cheer,
Adah and the Main Street Books Team
