Help reduce the suffering of cats in our community

Feral cat colonies – a grouping of unsocialized cats living together – can grow quickly if left unmanaged. Cats of Davidson is asking residents to help identify unaltered cats in the community so they can be humanely trapped, neutered/spayed, vaccinated and returned to their colonies (trap - neuter - return: TNR or TNVR) – or adopted if friendly.

Cats of Davidson was established in 2020 to end the suffering of unwanted and abandoned cats in the town of Davidson through active trap - neuter - return and adoption programs. To date, the all-volunteer team at Cats of Davidson has spayed and neutered over 600 cats.

We have been working hard to curb the number of unsterilized cats within our community, but we need your help. We have seen a resurgence of feral and community cats – cats who may be friendly but homeless – that have not yet been spayed or neutered. Cats of Davidson is here to help residents with this task by loaning out traps, providing free spay and neuter services, and educating the public on proper protocols.

Cat with eartip

You can recognize a cat that has already been TNRed by its eartip – a small, flat tip removed from one ear while the cat is under anesthesia. Any cat without a collar or eartip should be assumed to be unaltered and thus trapped for vetting.

TNR is essential for addressing homeless cat overpopulation. A single cat can produce more than 100 kittens in her lifetime; left unchecked, the number of homeless cats and kittens, exposed to predators, extreme weather conditions, disease, parasites, vehicles, and abuse by humans, can multiply quickly. Large feral cat populations can also cause disruptions to the local ecosystem. TNR is the most humane and effective method for stabilizing and reducing cat populations.

If you see a cat wandering around or you are feeding a cat without a collar or an eartip, report it to the Cats of Davidson website. If possible, please include the date/time/location of the sighting.
