Early Friday afternoon crews working on the project to install crosswalk beacons on Concord Road at the Preyer Building crosswalk hit a waterline. The boring machine they were using struck what was said to be an unmarked water main maintained by Charlotte Water.

The water main compromise has resulted in traffic being diverted off Concord to Lorimer. Drivers are forced to detour at Lorimer on the West side closest to Main Street and at College Drive to the East.

The Town put out an advisory, warning of the closure and the potential for the closure to be in effect until Monday.

Portions of the asphalt on Concord Road are already showing significant cracks and dips, suggesting a potential of caving in. All vehicles parked along Concord Road to the East of Lorimer were moved due to those concerns.

The work has the additional challenge of cross-connecting water main pipes on either side of Concord Road. As of 4 p.m. the water flow had slightly subsided but was still a significant leak.
