“The Struggle,” a Poem by Jody Seymour

The Struggle

Hate longed for space
deep within my soul
Its birth came in
moments of need
Something missing…
Something hurtful…
Something desired…
Always waiting to
take over
everything

Love seemed diminished
by Hate’s arrival
dimmed by the darkness
yet possessing a light
not shy in its
shining
Its birth came in
moments of need
Something filling…
Something corrected…
Something desired…
Longing to be noticed
to give life

Hate smiled at its dominance
sensing it had won
the struggle
Basking in its darkness
holding onto
a victory
witnessed by
deep pride
At last to
“have it all”

But Love held a secret
Its source always
needing to be shared
And in the midst
of the struggle
came an ancient
announcement,
“The light shines in
the darkness
and the darkness
will not
overcome it”

Hate’s disappointment
was buried for
a time
Always waiting
Always ready
Always needy

A voice then echoed
as the struggle
continued
“Be of love a
little more careful
than of
anything”
