DAVIDSON, NC – On Monday, May 18, 2026, the Town of Davidson removed the large water oak (Quercus nigra) on Main Street, near the Davidson Book Garden and the mid-block crosswalk. For many years, this large water oak has grown and watched over Main Street, the library, and our historic downtown Davidson. The Town had the tree formally assessed by a Tree Risk Assessment Qualified Arborist from Bartlett Tree Experts, and the results show that the tree has a significant amount of decay and hollow trunk.

The Town shared this photo showing the extent of the damage to the tree.

"While we value our trees, aging and declining trees can present a serious safety risk," said Town Arborist Andrew Sileo. "The water oak’s structural health has deteriorated significantly, and it is my professional opinion that the tree should be removed to prevent any risk to pedestrians, vehicles, and adjacent structures."

Click here to view the Tree Risk Assessment Report on the Town of Davidson website. The Town of Davidson will replace the tree this Fall to maintain the landscape of Main Street.
