“The Death of Robin Hood” Review
Starring Hugh Jackman as the titular Robin Hood, “The Death of Robin Hood” portrays the legend as a former robber and murderer rather than the more heroic portrayal most audiences are used to. After an intense battle, and, despite Robin Hood’s desire for death, Little John takes him to a healing priory run by a group of nuns. There, Robin tries to come to terms with his past and the lives he has affected.
An R-rated movie, “The Death of Robin Hood” very much earns that rating. Many scenes are filled with graphic violence and otherwise explicit imagery. On top of Robin Hood's propensity for violence, the movie also includes some rather vivid scenes of outdated medical methods.
Hugh Jackman shines as Robin Hood. A man haunted by his past, Robin is constantly pursued by his victims and their avenging families until he is gravely injured and ends up in the care of Sister Brigid, played expertly by Jodie Comer. Though wanting death, Robin also tries to find some level of peace before he goes. The priory becomes a journey for Robin as he discovers how some of his victims, also residing there, found their own peace.
A fascinating film, “The Death of Robin Hood” engages audiences from start to end. Often intense, the film may be a bit much for some viewers. However, most will find the payoff worth enduring the discomfort.
7/10.
