New Community Program Invites Residents to Build Bridges Across Political Differences

by Press Release | Jul 6, 2026

In a time when political divisions are straining families, friendships, workplaces, and neighborhoods, Indivisible Lake Norman is offering a different approach.

Beginning Wednesday, July 22, Indivisible Lake Norman will host Conversations That Change Things, a six-week, in-person course designed to help participants develop the skills to have meaningful conversations with people who see the world differently.

The program will meet Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., from July 22 through August 26.

The course will be led by Cristy Carroll, one of the founders of Indivisible Lake Norman. Carroll spent more than 30 years as a Human Resources executive and as a Certified Professional Coach. She has designed and facilitated leadership programs throughout her career and now brings those skills to helping strengthen communities through better conversations.

"We are sorting ourselves into smaller and smaller circles," Carroll said. "We unfriend people on social media, avoid difficult conversations, and sometimes break off relationships with family members because of politics. The result is that we become surrounded only by people who think like we do. That isn't community, and it isn't healthy for our democracy."

Rather than focusing on debate or persuasion, Conversations That Change Things teaches participants how to listen with curiosity, ask thoughtful questions, share personal stories effectively, and stay connected even when deep disagreements remain.

The curriculum draws on research and practices developed by organizations including Braver Angels and Deeper Conversations, as well as the work of journalist Monica Guzmán, author of I "Never Thought of It That Way."

"This work isn't about changing your values or giving up what you believe," Carroll said. "It's about expanding our capacity to listen, understand, and stay connected. We are not here to win arguments. We are here to build relationships that keep the door open."

The course is intended for anyone who wants to become a better listener, strengthen relationships, and help build healthier communities during an increasingly polarized time.
"We cannot solve problems together if we stop talking to one another," Carroll said. "Real change begins one conversation at a time."
