Freedom Schools Hosting Youth Mental Health Rally on Town Green

by Davidson College | Jul 13, 2026

Brenda H. Tapia Freedom Schools is housed at the Ada Jenkins Center and is sponsored by Davidson College.

This is a free summer school program for 1st-8th graders focused on literacy and social justice. We serve almost 60 scholars for 6 weeks. We teach them literacy skills, provide two free meals a day, take them on field trips, and engage with their families.

On Wednesday, July 15, from 2-3 p.m., we are hosting a youth mental health rally on the Davidson Village Green. This is a student-led event, meaning our students will give speeches and lead the chants. There will be a few town commissioners, a member of the CMS Board of Education, and other local leaders in attendance, as well.

Our goal is to bring awareness of youth's mental health needs and teach our scholars that their voices matter. We would greatly appreciate the community's support. Our scholars have been putting so much work into preparing the event, and they would be ecstatic to know that the community wants to amplify their voices even more.
