“Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass” Review
Starring Zoey Deutch as Gail Daughtry, “Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass” tells the story of Gail, an engaged hair stylist in a small town. Two weeks before her wedding, her friend and colleague tells her about the idea of a celebrity sex pass, a one-time pass that allows you to have sex with a celebrity of your choice should you meet them. Initially thinking the pass is a joke, her fiancée not only considers it real but uses it with a famous actress. Frustrated and confused, Gail takes her friend up on an offer for a weekend trip to California to see a famous hair stylist. While there, she decides to see a psychic who tells her she needs to use her pass to save her upcoming wedding. Deciding her celebrity will be Jon Hamm, Gail teams up with a colorful cast of characters to find and have sex with Hamm.
An over-the-top comedy, this film cleverly and slowly reveals its “Wizard of Oz” farcical screenplay. There are many celebrity cameos, providing some of the most unexpected and hilarious moments of the film. The cast itself blends a collection of characters worthy of their Oz counterparts, though without the innocence. John Slattery in particular shines as a has-been actor trying to prove his worth and reconnect with Hamm. Ghosted at almost every turn, Slattery's blind optimism and commitment to the cause make for both a hilarious and endearing performance.
“Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass” does not pass up on any opportunity for a joke. And while seemingly cheap shots and disconnected, the humorous scenes and lines make sense as the film progresses. A second viewing would most likely provide more coherence and a better appreciation for the film. An incredibly energetic film, it rarely leaves audiences bored. While jokes can seem weak and overabundant at times, the film quickly improves as it progresses.
