In The Mail: 2026 Mecklenburg County Property Tax Bills

by Press Release | Jul 29, 2026

Mecklenburg County mailed 2026 bills for real property, individual personal property, and business personal property taxes on Tuesday, July 28. Bills are due Sept. 1, 2026, and must be paid by Jan. 5, 2027, to avoid interest.

This year, approximately 449,000 tax bills are being mailed to taxpayers throughout Mecklenburg County. For certain properties whose tax records or values are under appeal, the respective tax bills will be subsequently mailed.

All tax bills paid on or after Jan. 6, 2027, will be assessed interest at a rate of 2% for January. Additional interest in the amount of 0.75% will be charged for February and every month thereafter until paid. Any taxpayer who may have difficulty paying their bill is encouraged to contact the Office of Tax Administration as soon as possible. It is imperative that taxpayers do not wait until December or after the bill is delinquent to express concern with their ability to pay.

For those with mortgage escrow accounts, their real property tax bills are sent directly to the mortgage holder for payment, with the owner receiving a property tax notification from the Office of Tax Administration.

Here’s how to pay your tax bill:

  • Website: Visit MeckNC.gov/PayTax and use your credit card, debit card, or e-check.
  • Phone: Call toll-free 1-800-994-1026 and use your credit card, debit card, or pay by e-check.
  • Mail: Mail your check using the return envelope that accompanied your tax bill.
  • In person: Pay at the Tax Administrator’s office at the Valerie C. Woodard Center, 3205 Freedom Drive, Suite 3000, Charlotte, NC, 28208 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Cash, credit cards, debit cards, money orders and checks are accepted. Make checks payable to the Mecklenburg County Tax Collector.
  • Online Banking Bill Pay System: This payment option is not recommended for tax payments. If the payment is rejected for any reason, interest accrued cannot be removed. Payment may take up to four business days, after it has been authorized, before it is applied to the tax bill. If there is an error, for example a missing or incorrect tax bill number, the payment will be rejected and returned to the financial institution.

A convenience fee is charged by the payment vendor when using the credit card or debit card option. There is no charge for electronic check (e-check) payments.
