Slipping Away: a Poem by Jody Seymour

Slipping Away
(a poem about memory loss…
especially for caregivers)
“Forgetting to remember”…
words whispered on
a fleeting breath
taking the present
away quietly
The past rests like
a waiting rocking chair
empty yet needing
someone to sit
in it and give
it life
and motion
So much left-over love
seen in dark eyes
that tell stories
that are no longer
told…now
Still alive are yesterdays
seen and remembered
by those who love
The “fading” is a
very real illusion
but those who
remember still
know
Somewhere all is kept from
slipping away
Beyond the long daily
journey there is
a place where
all is remembered
…It waits
Eternity will clear away
the clouds of unknowing
and silent bells
again will ring
and the sound
will never
slip away
