When a community comes together to help neighbors age in place, the impact reaches deep, and sometimes it comes full circle in the sweetest ways. For Donna DuVal, a board member and volunteer here at Senior Community Connections (SCC), her journey with our mission actually began long before she officially signed on.

“The spark was reading a newspaper article about a group in Davidson coming together to develop a program to help seniors stay in their homes longer,” Donna shared. “I never forgot it.”

A decade later, a neighbor brought up SCC. Donna immediately recognized the concept, smiling as she realized it was the same effort she’d read about years before, now expanded to serve Cornelius residents, too. She picked up the phone to join soon after.

Right from her very first monthly breakfast, Donna felt the warmth of the group. “The room was full of welcoming seniors talking and laughing,” she remembered. “I never felt like a newcomer or an outsider.”

Today, Donna stays actively involved on our board and in the community. She loves seeing how our transportation volunteers help folks get out and about, ensuring everyone can join in on monthly events and stay connected.

When asked about a favorite memory, Donna pointed to a special tradition that hits close to home.

“I don’t have room for a Christmas tree anymore, so I joined a small committee to decorate the SCC Christmas tree that is placed on the Green during Christmas in Davidson,” Donna said. “We had a lot of fun choosing the theme, shopping for decorations, and trimming the tree together.”

Whether she’s helping govern behind the scenes, riding along to social gatherings, or trimming trees on the Green, Donna’s warmth and dedication represent the best of SCC. We are so lucky to have her!
