Wildcats Blank Towson 4-0 to Notch First Win

DAVIDSON — Two goals in a four-minute, 11-second stretch of the third quarter helped the Davidson field hockey team pull away from Towson 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 1-1.

Lourdes Wolf got the Wildcats started with a goal in the 12th minute of the first quarter, off an Ellie Johnson assist. It was Wolf’s team-leading second score of the season. 

But the Tigers (0-2) stayed within a goal until Matilda Collins converted a penalty stroke with 10:36 left in the third quarter. Emily Najarian then followed with a goal, her career first, to make it 3-0 with 6:25 left in the third.

Davidson made it 4-0 in the fourth when Ise Adams scored her first college goal by deflecting in a hard-hit pass from fellow freshman Sophie Rousseau.

Meanwhile, the Davidson defense held firm throughout and thwarted every Towson threat. Keeper Avery Foster made four saves in the shutout.

‘Cats Fall to Hoyas in Opener

DAVIDSON — Davidson’s field hockey team was unable to capitalize on advantages in shots and penalty corners in a 2-1 season-opening loss to Georgetown Friday night at Belk Turf Field.

Lourdes Wolf, one of the Wildcats’ top returning scorers from last season, scored the team’s only goal, tying the game at 1-1 in the third minute of the second quarter. She gathered a rebound off an Eva van der Kooi shot that was saved and found the back of the net.

The Hoyas soon answered, however, with a go-head goal by Adelae Chierici following a penalty corner.

Georgetown’s first goal came from Tatum Johnson in the fourth minute of the contest. It was also off a corner.

The Wildcats had a 13-5 shots advantage and had 13 corners to four from the Hoyas.

Friday’s game was delayed more than two hours because of lightning.
