Jonah and the Fish
Fishing for Grace
(Jonah and the Fish)
Swallowed by the mouth
of wishful thinking
Running away from
grace
It can’t be done
Ask poor Jonah…
weary fisherman
Rather than fish
he became bait
Grace engulfed him
and spit him
out
On a shore of contempt…
caught in a net
of no escape
He gave in to a
God who would
not give up…
even on him
Now you who swim in
seas of busy
days that become
lost in numbers
on a calendar
Where is your escape?
What great fish
seeks you as its
next catch?
Give up, but not on grace
Not for the deserving
is its net of
no escape
It longs to possess
you for its own
so that having been
swallowed
captured
caught
you may feel its
warm caress
and
thus
you
may fish for grace
that others
may be
caught
