West Davidson Stream Clean-up

Morning showers on March 25 failed to deter 26 hardy souls from removing trash and debris from the lake at Roosevelt Wilson Park and from the streams that feed it. This West Davidson community event was organized and led by Davidson Lands Conservancy (DLC) in partnership with Mecklenburg County Storm Water and the Town of Davidson.
Rain soaked but happy volunteers
Drainage in the area brings not only water but also debris to the streams and the lake. Debris in the natural environment, particularly streams, stresses wildlife and can deteriorate water quality. Such trash collects in the streams and wetlands that surround the Roosevelt Park lake and in the lake itself, which feeds Lake Davidson, part of the Catawba River basin.
DLC Board member Gordon Clark welcomed and led his fellow volunteers, with neighborhood residents Roni and Rich Labarbera supporting the cleanup effort. Volunteers included students from Davidson College, Hough High School, Odell School, Community School of Davidson, and Lake Norman Charter.

This was the second year DLC has led a local stream clean-up, and several of this year’s volunteers assisted in last year’s community event. Volunteers divided into groups, armed with trash bags, trash grabbers, gloves, and hip boots, ready to clear refuse from two tributaries that extend from the Jetton Street area, feeding the lake. Public Works assisted in collecting and removing the filled trash bags.
As an accredited land trust, DLC seeks to conserve local lands and natural resources and connect lives to nature. DLC advances this mission through education and through its four conservation pillars: land conservation, urban forestry, greenways and trails, and wildlife habitat.
