Dr. Sally McMillen presents
A Selection of the Best Southern History Books from 2018

Dr. Sally McMillen, Professor of History Emerita, Davidson College, was one of three historians appointed to the Owsley Committee of the Southern Historical Association to pick the best book on southern history published in 2018.  Each of the three historians read and evaluated twenty-two books to determine the winner of the best book.   Dr. McMillen will talk about a few of the books she found most interesting (without revealing the winner!!).

The Frank L. and Harriet C. Owsley Award is given in recognition of a distinguished book in southern history.  It will next be awarded at the annual meeting in 2019 in Louisville, KY for a book published during 2018.

Sally G. McMillen retired in 2016 as the Mary Reynolds Babcock Professor of History. She specialized in 19th-century history of the American South and of American women’s history. She is the author of five monographs, including her two most recent books, Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement and Lucy Stone: An Unapologetic Life (Oxford University Press). She was the winner of the Hunter Hamilton Love of Teaching Award in 2000 and a founder of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Department.
