An Evening With Sheri Reynolds ’89 – Abbott Scholars Program

Sheri Reynolds, Davidson Class of 1989, is the author of the novels Bitterroot Landing, The Rapture of Canaan (an Oprah Book club selection and New York Times bestseller), A Gracious Plenty, Firefly Cloak, The Sweet In-Between, The Homespun Wisdom of Myrtle T. Cribb, and the play Orabelle's Wheelbarrow. She teaches creative writing and literature at Old Dominion and is currently the English Department chair.  She makes her home in the town of Cape Charles on Virginia's eastern shore.

The Piedmont’s Bronze Age Confederate Monuments: A Quasi Archaeological Report

Dr. Gary R. Freeze, the William R. Weaver Professor of Humanities at Catawba College, will discuss the tarnished sentinels to something presumed “lost”, yet endlessly “not forgotten” in the American South. The recently resumed combat over public display of Confederate monuments has emboldened some scholars to maneuver beyond the present parameters of postmodern culture wars. This presentation—using as artifacts the monuments within an hour’s drive from Davidson—examines their “modality” in conventional terms, but speculates in new ways about their “mettle”.

Dr. Mark Wild-Ramsing is the former Deputy State Archaeologist (Underwater) of North Carolina and past director of the Queen Anne's Revenge Shipwreck Project.
